Teachers' Guide to Using the Internet in Religious Education |
![]() |
It's free, it's fun, it's got what we need and it's here! All schools now have Internet access, and the majority of pupils also have it at home. But have we discovered its potential for Religious Education - in school, and when setting homework? |
PRIMARY SOURCESIf you want to know about Judaism - ask a Jew! To understand Islam, it's best to ask a Muslim. Only a 'primary source' can be an authentic and authoritative resource to our Religious Education - but it's often difficult to arrange. Appropriate textbooks are expensive, limited in scope, and quickly become dated. How do we avoid settling for 'second-hand R.E.'? Members of most world faiths are running child-centred websites as authoritative primary sources for Religious Education. |

WHERE? |
|
![]() |
REonline - the virtual R.E. centre. A family of websites resourcing Religious Education for all key faiths. Includes the REsite. Type in a keyword (Islam, baptism, Torah etc.) and you will be pointed to some of the best websites. |
|
RE:QUEST RE:Quest (www.request.org.uk) is the U.K.'s largest primary source website for teaching Christianity within Religious Education, and its writers include members of all the main U.K. denominations. |
|
INTERACTIVE |
|
| The Internet is so much more than a textbook! Pupils can interact with the content to ask questions, see video, hear music and find out more about what interests them. They can use links to other websites, using the Internet as a vast library of information. | |
| Each section of RE:Quest provides links to many other helpful websites, opening the door to a wider understanding of Christian faith and practice. | |
APPROACH |
|
![]() |
A box of artefacts is an excellent aid to teaching about many of the world faiths, leading to understanding about a rich variety of festivals, beliefs and practices. Unfortunately, this approach doesn't work well for Christianity. Of the seventeen Christian denominations currently featured within RE:Quest, only three have significant artefacts to put in a 'Christianity Box'. For instance, what would a Quaker put in - silence? The RE:Quest website allows Christians to speak for themselves about what really happens in U.K. churches today, in all their richness and diversity. |
ALL AGE |

Infants love using the Internet! Juniors enjoy the interaction and can use it to resource their projects. GCSE pupils love the accessibility, and being able to ask their own questions. RE:Quest seeks to provide comprehensive coverage of Christianity for every aspect of the Religious Education syllabus. Unlock the potential of the Internet in your next lesson! |
