George Müller (27th September 1805 - 10th March 1898)

Müller was now 65 years old. He had trained his staff well and they all followed the same principles of making known their needs to God alone. He was able to leave them in charge for long periods while he travelled extensively preaching and teaching.

During the next 30 years, he travelled over 200,000 miles, always returning to the Orphan Homes he loved at Ashley Down and where, at the age of 92, he died peacefully.

Bristol had never seen anything quite like Müller's funeral. Most shops and businesses closed, flags flew at half mast, thousands lined the streets and 7,000 people were at the cemetery.

During his life, Miiller received nearly one and a half million pounds. After his death, many expected the work to run down but, under the leadership of Christians with the same trust in God, the homes on Ashley Down continued to care for orphans - in all, over 10,000.

After the Second World War, the new welfare state greatly reduced the need. The Homes were closed and large houses bought as homes for much smaller groups of orphans, who were cared for by Christian house parents.
