The Carmelites (White Friars)

The Carmelites started with Christian hermits that lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. They came to England in 1240 and lived very strict, simple lives. Their monasteries were called priories and there were 50 when they were closed by Henry VIII.

The monks wear white cloaks over brown habits. There is a Carmelite convent today in Darlington.
