William Carey was a very ordinary boy who became an extraordinary man. He was born in a country village and had a very basic education. He became famous all over the world, spending most of his life in India. He was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree and became a professor of Indian languages. He taught himself six foreign languages before he was thirty. |

| By the end of his life he had translated the Bible and other books into over thirty languages. He has been called 'the father of modern missions' because his missionary adventures in India woke up the church in this country to a sense of responsibility towards the rest of the world. He always claimed he had no special talent except the ability to 'plod'. If he started something he must finish it. But what he did have was the gift of imagination. | |
