Why the poppy?

Poppy

"In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below."
John McCrae 1915

An army surgeon wrote these words as he stood outside a dressing stating, taking a break from saving lives. Today they are read at Remembrance Services around the world.

Poppies grow where the soil has been disturbed - in this case, by war.

Poppies are sold by the Royal British Legion, a charity dedicated to helping war veterans. People buy and wear the poppies both to give money, and as a sign of respect for those who fought.
