Why is it called Mothering Sunday?

Mothering Sunday is a traditional celebration not a religious one. It goes back to the time when many young people had to leave home to get a job as a servant or maid in large houses. Mothering Sunday was a holiday for these youngsters and they were allowed to go home to visit their families. They would usually take a gift of flowers or a cake to give to their mothers. They would often go to church as a family and the girls would make a special meal.

How is Mothering Sunday celebrated today?

Children often give their mothers a gift and a card on Mothering Sunday. Churches will often celebrate the day by giving flowers to mothers in the congregation and praying for mothers and families. Some have special family services that are suitable for the whole family to take part in.
