Good Friday

hot cross buns

Why do people eat hot cross buns on Good Friday?

It is likely that spicy buns were a springtime speciality before Christian times. When people became Christians the tradition continued and a cross was put on the top as a reminder of what happened on Good Friday. The buns were once a breakfast treat but now they are eaten at any time of the day. They are usually served hot with butter.

The song Hot Cross Buns comes from the time when bakers sold their buns in the street and called out to let people know they were selling hot cross buns.
