All Saints' Day (All Hallow's Day) 1st November

Who do you admire?

Was it something they said?

Was it something they did?

Was it recently - or long ago?

All Saints Day is when Christians celebrate the lives of Saints - Christians whose example is important to us. They think about the good things that they said and did.

In Anglican churches, this song may be sung:

"For all the saints, who from their labour rest,
who You, by faith, before the world confessed.
Your name, Oh Jesus, be for ever blessed -
Allelujah!"
(William Walsham How)

  • What is it thinking about?
  • Where are they 'resting'?
  • How might this affect the way a Christian lives?
The Preiest wears red robes
In Catholic and Anglican churches the Priest will wear red robes (the colour of blood) to remember the Christians who have died because of their faith (martyrs).
All Saints Day falls on 1st November, and is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic Church. This annual celebration began in 609 when Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon in Rome, to the Blessed Virgin and all the Martyrs. It is followed by All Souls' Day. This is a celebration of the lives of all Christians who have died, and a time to think about heaven.
