Christmas Trees

Christmas tree decorations
Decorating pine trees at Christmas is a very old German custom. But when did it come to Britain? Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, who came from Germany, and brought the custom with him. By 1840 Christmas at Windsor Castle included a decorated Christmas tree, and by 1860 the fashion had spread right across the country, and had become an important part of Christmas.

The first Christmas trees were decorated with real candles. Not surprisingly, many of them caught fire! Electric lights are much safer, but still need to be treated with great care.

What does a Christmas tree say about God? The pine tree is triangular in shape, which reminds us that Christians believe God is a trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

It is an evergreen (never loses its leaves), which reminds Christians of their hope of eternal (everlasting) life. The angel on the top reminds us of the angels in the Christmas story, and the decorations are - well, just pretty!
