What Does The Bible Say ... About Marriage?

"Since they are no longer two but one, let no one separate them, for God has joined them together."
(The Bible, Matthew chapter 19 verse 6)

In Christian marriage the couple are joined together by God in a life-long partnership.

"... Submit to one another ... husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. He gave up his life for her ... In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies."
(The Bible, Ephesians chapter 5 verses 21 - 28)

In Christian marriage each gives the other appropriate love and care in a self-sacrificing way by putting their partner's needs first.

"Give honour to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery."
(The Bible, Hebrews chapter 13 verse 4)

Christians believe that God intends the gift of sex to take place only within the marriage partnership.

"God gives some the gift of marriage, and to others he gives the gift of singleness"
(The Bible, 1 Corinthians chapter 7 verse 7)

Christians believe that celibacy is a gift of God to some, even as marriage is to others.
