Saint Valentine

Ancient gate to the city of Rome

Who was Saint Valentine? A Priest and a Bishop with that name were both killed for their Christian faith in about 275 AD. They are both buried on the Flamian Way, outside Rome, and one of the city gates used to be called the Gate of Saint Valentine.

What has that to do with love? In the Middle Ages, people believed that birds began to pair at this time of year, and in England and France the 14 th February became special to lovers. It was a time to write love letters and send lover's tokens. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote:

:"For this was sent on St. Valentine's Day
When every fowl cometh forth to choose his mate."
