Saint Thomas Becket

Canterbury Cathedral
Thomas Becket was Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church in England. He opposed King Henry II, who was trying to take certain legal rights away from the church. The King shouted "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Four knights immediately set out for Canterbury, and brutally murdered Thomas in the cathedral, on 29th December 1170. King Henry was deeply saddened that this had happened, and publicly did things to show how sorry he was.

Thomas Becket was buried in Canterbury Cathedral, and his tomb became England's most important place of pilgrimage, until the shrine was destroyed by King Henry VIII in 1538.
