Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis
Assisi
Francis of Assisi had lived a selfish life, until an illness made him see the emptiness of living just to please himself. He left his father's wealthy home, to live a life of literal obedience to the words of Jesus: "He sent them out to tell everyone about the kingdom of God ... 'Don't even take a walking stick,' he instructed them, 'nor a traveller's bag, nor food, nor money. Not even an extra coat.'" (The Bible, Luke chapter 9 verses 2 - 3).

He rebuilt churches, preached and was gentle to everyone - even animals. His extreme poverty and humility shocked many, but in time people came to respect and admire him.

The followers of Francis of Assisi became the Franciscan order of monks that still exists today.
