Rites of Passage

Bishop and congregation
As we go through life, we come to major 'milestones' - significant events and moments that may be marked by a party, a ceremony, or, for Christians, a particular service in church. We celebrate the birth of a child, deciding to be a Christian for oneself, getting married and even death.
These are known as 'rites of passage'. Christian groups (denominations) may celebrate these in diferent ways from one another, and even within the same denomination, individual churches may vary in what they do. For instance, some parents chose to have their babies baptised, whilst others will have a Service of Thanksgiving.
Infant Baptism
believer's baptism
Usually adults in the Anglican Church will be baptised at a font, but some are baptised by immersion. Some Christian groups - like the Quakers and the Salvation Army - celebrate fewer rites of passage. Follow the links below to find you way around.
