A Day in the Life ... of the Iona Community

Off the west coast of Scotland, and part of the Inner Hebrides, IONA is a beautiful island attracting people from all over the world although its normal population is about 90. With 100 guests who come to stay in the Abbey and surrounds every week from March to November I can often talk to them (and others on holiday) about the Abbey, though I am not an official guide.

It is good to tell the story of Abbot McKinnon, whose effigy lies in the Abbey, how he lost his head and got it back again. Noah's Ark is rarely seen by visitors, but it's hiding somewhere. And then there are the bones under the stones in the nave. Can they be seen? That would be telling.
