Ring the bell, it's ten minutes to nine! I have to remember to do that every morning and evening at IONA ABBEY where I work as SACRISTAN. Of course, I do other things as well - lighting candles, sorting chairs, putting out the right hymn books and generally making sure the Abbey is tidy. |

A SACRISTAN in a church normally is someone who looks after the SACRISTY, a room containing all the artefacts (things) needed for a service. However a long time ago a Sacristan was someone who copied out music for people to sing in church, particularly in the Celtic church, which thrived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, parts of S.W. England and N.W. France well over 1000 years ago. |
