Anglican Thanksgiving Service

baby
When parents bring their child for infant baptism, they say that they are followers of Jesus and promise to bring their child up in the Christian faith. If they are not committed Christians or regular churchgoers, they may choose to have a 'Service for Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child' instead.

In the Thanksgiving Service the parent(s) thank God for the gift of the child. They and supporting friends and family (there are not godparents) promise to do all they can to help and support in bringing up the child, and the responsibility for the child is also shared by the congregation. It is ideal for people who do not attend church regularly themselves, but still believe in God.

The service is not just for those who rarely come to church. Many committed Christians feel it is right for children to be baptized only when they are old enough to understand the promises they make for themselves. In some Churches the service is also used as part of preparation for later baptism.

A register is kept of children who have had a Thanksgiving Service and the child receives a certificate of the ceremony.
