York Minster is the biggest medieval cathedral north of the Alps, and one of the most important places of worship in England. It is called a minster because it was started as a centre for mission - a base from which to spread the Christian faith. The Bishop who began the Minster was the missionary who brought Christianity to this area. York Minster is the Cathedral of the Archbishop of York. He is responsible for the work of the Church of England throughout the north of England. The Archbishop of Canterbury looks after the south. School visits are welcomed and well provided for at York Minster. However, they do need to be booked beforehand. |
