The Chapel of St. George and the English Martyrs |
![]() |
St. George was a Roman soldier who was killed for his Christian faith in about 320 AD. He is the patron saint of England. The chapel is dedicated to those who have been martyred in England. Nearby is a mosaic of St. Alban, another Roman soldier and the first Christian to be killed for his faith in England. Behind the altar is a carving of Christ on the cross. Standing either side of him in the carving are St. Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England, and St. John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester. Both men were executed by King Henry VIII in 1535, because they refused to accept him as head of the English church instead of the Pope. Saint George's day is 23rd April. |
