The Sanctuary

Raised above the Nave are the Sanctuary and the High Altar - the most important altar in the Cathedral. On the altar is a crucifix which shows the death of Jesus, and six candles.

Over the altar is the canopy, or baldachino, which stands on four pillars.

At the front of the Sanctuary is the lectern, from which the Bible is read.

Nearby is the Cathedra, on which the Archbishop sits. The present Archbishop of Westminster is Cardinal Cormac O'Conner.
