The Baptistry

The Baptistry is near the door of the Cathedral because baptism is the way that people show they have entered, or joined, the Christian church.

The font is huge - making a round pool of water five feet across. It is this big to remind Christians that the first baptisms were by full immersion - people were ducked right under the water.

The font is filled with water and blessed each Easter.

There is a smaller basin carved into its side that is usually used for baptisms today.

Next to the font is the paschal candle.
