The Font |
Methodists baptise children, and adults who have not yet been baptised. In the centre of the font is the smaller bowl that is used for baptisms in Wesley's Chapel. This is carved from the doorstep of the Carribean home of Nathaniel Gilbert. Gilbert was a slave owner who became a Christian when he heard John Wesley preach in Bristol. He set his slaves free, and preached to them every week from the doorstep of his house. |
