The South Transept

In the South Transept there are lots of stone carvings. They are about all sorts of everyday things. These carvings of a grape stealer are like a comic strip in stone.
the thief steals some grapes
a worker sees the thief
An old man looks over his shoulder as he steals a bunch of grapes. A boy holds a basket full of grapes.
A worker sees the thieves, and tells the farmer.
the old man is caught
The farmer hits the thief
The boy has got away, but the angry farmer grabs the man. He is going to prod him with a hay fork.
The farmer hits the thief so hard with his hay fork that his hat falls off!

This man has a bad toothache. There are eleven carvings of men with toothache in Wells Cathedral - it must have been a big problem here!
