The Singing Gallery

Singing Gallery

Inside the West Front of the Cathedral is a passageway with holes cut through to the outside. On Palm Sunday each year a great procession used to cross The Green to enter the Cathedral. Choristers and trumpeters would stand in the passageway to sing and play, so that the sound came through the holes. They represented the angels of heaven welcoming Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday.
Read about the first Palm Sunday in The Bible, Matthew chapter 21 verses 1 - 11.
