The Nave

the Nave

Southwark Cathedral was built as a priory church in 1106. Augustinian monks lived here, ran a hospital and gave alms to the poor.

In 1539 the monastery was closed by King Henry VIII, and the building was used as a parish church, until it was made a cathedral in 1905.

service in progress

Southwark Cathedral serves the south of London. Services take place three times every day, and once an hour everyone in the Cathedral stops for a short prayer.
