More on the Methodists

Methodist Practices

Methodist churches are usually organised into groups of churches called 'Circuits'. These churches are looked after by one or more ordained Ministers and then non-ordained preachers and worship leaders. There are two types of Minister: Presbyters and Deacons.

Although there are service books, preachers do not have to follow a particular pattern and therefore there is a lot of variety in Methodist services. Methodists like to be involved in their services, and there is often drama and lots of music, and above all singing!

Communion (Breaking of the Bread)

Methodists usually take communion about twice a month. Communion is taken in different ways in different churches, but all communion services involve sharing the bread and wine, just as Jesus instructed his disciples to do, in memory of him.

It is a very personal service, with lots of time for reflection and prayer. But it is also very important for the church family, too, bringing the entire congregation together in celebration. For this reason, there are no restrictions on who can take communion. You do not have to be a confirmed member of the church, there are no age restrictions, and visitors of any denomination or none are welcome to join in this very special sacrament. The only restriction is that an ordained Minister must lead the service. In a circuit of Methodist churches, there will usually be at least one communion service taking place in one of the churches, every Sunday, so members can take communion on that day.
