I Go to a Free Church of Scotland Church

The Form of Worship

psalter
In a Free Church of Scotland service there is no instrumental music and we sing only Psalms - in a metrical version. It is possible to buy a Bible with this version printed at the back and there are books called Psalters which contain the words and music. Because no musical instrument is used, the singing is led by a precentor who starts the Psalm and then everyone joins in.

Over the past few years the Church has been producing a new version which some congregations are using. In most congregations the people stand for the prayers and sit during the singing.
Services are held morning and evening on a Sunday and there is a mid-week meeting for prayer and Bible Study. There are other meetings for women and for men.
