Looking Inside ... A Church of Scotland Church Building |

This church not only has its original wooden pews, but also a gallery, allowing as many people as possible to be seated for a church service. Before pews were introduced, people would stand or sit on stools. Famously, in 1637, at the Church of Scotland's High Kirk of St. Giles in Edinburgh, Jenny Geddes threw her stool at the Minister because he tried to change the style of worship on the instructions of King Charles I. |
| At the time of the Reformation, visual images in Presbyterian churches were discouraged. Nowadays, banners are one way in which the visual arts are being used to say something of what is important to the church members. The banners in this picture suggest that church is a happy place to be, and that the congregation enjoys lively music. |
