This is the altar. It is usually covered with an altar cloth and has candles on it. The main Catholic religious service is called the Mass. The first part of the Mass takes place at the lectern and is called the Liturgy of the Word. The second part takes place here at the altar and is called the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The word 'Eucharist' means 'Thanksgiving'. |

As you can see, behind the altar there is a special place called the tabernacle. It is often in the shape of a small house. Inside the tabernacle there is Holy Communion. For this reason Catholics believe that the tabernacle is the holiest place in the church. |
