This area is called the sanctuary. This word means 'a holy place'. On the right is the lectern from which the holy Word of God is read. On the left is the baptismal font where people are baptised. Behind the font is a special candle called the Paschal Candle. In the centre you can see the altar. On the wall behind the altar is a special place called the tabernacle. Hanging from the wall on the right is the Sanctuary Lamp. Hanging from the ceiling, above the altar, is the canopy. We have already looked at the lectern. Now you can learn more about the other things in this picture.
These parents have brought their baby to the church to be baptised at the font.
