More on the Brethren

Evangelism

Evangelism is the word used for telling people about Jesus. This has always been important to the Brethren. At one time, one member in every hundred went abroad to work as a missionary. Because of this, today there are Brethren churches all over the world, and a great many Brethren missionaries still work overseas. They will often bring much-needed skills to deprived communities. Trained doctors, nurses, teachers, and dentists, they work to show the love of Jesus in practical ways.

In the U.K., churches are involved in the community in many different ways - running youth clubs, mother and toddler groups, playgroups, providing meals and activities for the Elderly. There will usually be a Sunday School, to teach the Christian faith to primary-aged children. For adults there may be an Alpha Course, or other group for people who are 'just looking'.

Buildings

The simple Brethren buildings are sometimes called 'Chapels'or 'Gospel Halls'. They may be old tin huts, converted warehouses, or smart new purpose-built premises. There will usually be a platform at the front for the musicians, and the person leading the service. There will not be an altar; there is usually a simple table, which will be empty when not in use for communion. The walls are usually plain, although often there will be bright banners.

There are usually several other rooms, often including a large hall for indoor games and smaller rooms for group activities.
