Baptism

Baptism
When a person decides to become a Christian they show they have done this by being baptised. In Brethren churches, there is usually a small pool, called a Baptistry, let into the floor and covered over when it is not in use. It is big enough for two or three people to go into, and deep enough for the person being baptised to go right under the water. Sometimes a portable pool is used instead.

This is called "Believers' baptism" because it happens after a person has chosen for themself to believe in Jesus. It may be called "baptism by immersion", because the person goes right under the water.

Other Services

Because Brethren churches are independent, what they do will vary from one church to another. In addition to the Communion Service, there will usually be a Sunday service to teach what the Bible says, and a meeting during the week for people who want to study the Bible some more, and to pray together. For many churches, these midweek meetings will be small groups that meet in members' homes. These will be informal times, when people are free to ask questions, and share their problems and needs.
