What Does A Vicar Wear?

Many Anglican clergy wear special clothes, or vestments.
(Click to see enlarged photos in a new window)

cassock
First the Vicar puts on his cassock. This is a long black coat. Bishops wear a purple cassock.
surplice

This is the surplice - a white linen over-garment. The Vicar wears this at morning and evening services, and some would wear this for Holy Communion.

Round his neck the Vicar wears a clerical, or Roman collar.

scarf
Over the surplice the Vicar wears a long black scarf, or, for Holy Communion, a coloured stole or chasuble.
hood
When wearing the black scarf, the Vicar may also wear a hood.
alb

For Holy Communion, some Vicars will wear an alb instead of the cassock and surplice. This is a white linen garment with a sash round the middle.

On top is a coloured stole.

chasuble
Over the alb and stole the Vicar will wear a special coloured chasuble. The stole and chasuble are a special colour according to the season of the Church year.
