What Christians believe about ... Life After Death |
|
| JUDGEMENT | |
| "Each person dies only
once and after that comes judgement." "I saw the dead, both
great and small, standing before God's throne
And the books were
opened, including the Book of Life. The dead were judged according to
what they had done." "God's judgement is right.
... God is just. ... He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you
and give relief to you who are troubled ... He will punish those who do
not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. ... They will
be shut out from the presence of the Lord." Christians believe that everyone will be judged by God after they die. Most Christians believe that after death you go to heaven or hell. Heaven is eternal life in the presence of God, in the perfect New Creation where there is no sadness or suffering. (The Bible, Revelation chapter 21 verses 1 - 5) Hell is being cut off from the life of God for ever. Roman Catholics also believe in purgatory - a place where unconfessed sins are punished before a person goes to heaven. Christians believe that God is just and fair. When people do wrong, Christians believe they have the chance to repent and be forgiven by God, or to face God's punishment after they die. Words used to describe God's forgiveness are 'salvation' (being saved or rescued by faith in Jesus) and 'redemption' (the idea of wrongdoing being forgiven or 'paid for' by Jesus' death on the cross). Christians want to live by the teachings of Jesus and do what is right as a response to God's gift of forgiveness. |
