What Christians believe about ... Becoming A Christian

'It's not what you know - it's who you know!'
reading the Bible
In many areas of life, knowing and being associated with the 'right' people can have a big impact on your life. You get connected to the people you see or the things you do - so someone who works in history becomes a historian, someone who enjoys being funny is a comedian.
The men and women who first followed Jesus Christ were given the name Christian.

What you believe is a very personal choice. Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian - going to MacDonalds doesn't make you a burger!

People usually spend time finding out and making up their own mind before becoming a Christian. Perhaps they will have been to Sunday School, Confirmation Classes or an Alpha course.

Most Christians would agree that becoming a Christian involves these things:

  • Saying sorry to God for the wrong things we have done (confession)
  • Choosing to change the way we live by putting God first (repentance)
  • Believeing in Jesus for ourselves (faith)
  • Accepting Jesus' gift of forgiveness
  • Finding out, and doing what Jesus says is right (obedience)

People show that they have decided to become a Christian by being baptised or confirmed.
