Beliefs, Teachings and Sources

In Key Stage 2, you will have learned many things about what Christians believe, about God, Jesus, the Church, and life after death, the Bible.

In this unit we are going to build on what you learned before and look at why Christians believe in God and where their beliefs come from.

In this section we are going to look at how Christians decide what they believe. We will be asking if Christians have reasons for their beliefs or whether they just made their beliefs up. We will be discussing whether all Christians believe the same things.

To find out where Christians have developed their beliefs from, you have to look at Christian sources. We will consider four main sources which have helped Christians develop their beliefs.

(A) One of the main Christian sources is the Bible. The Bible is the Christian holy book and you will have studied this before.

(B) Some Christians take into account the teachings of Church Leaders in the past. For Roman Catholic Christians, the teachings of their Church are an important authority.

(C) All Christians believe that God has given us a conscience . This is something inside of every individual that tells us what is right and wrong. Consciences help Christians to know what is right and wrong.

(D) Old statements of Christian beliefs, called creeds, are helpful to Christians. Creeds summarise Christian beliefs.
