Issues: Politics and Social Responsibility

Welfare State Summary

  1. Some Christians believe that politics and religion should be kept separate. They believe that when Jesus says 'Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's', he meant that Christians should concentrate on spiritual matters and let the politicians get on with governing. Also in Romans chapter 13 verse 1 and Titus chapter 3 verse 1 it suggests that Governments are put in place by God - Christians therefore shouldn't interfere.
  2. Most Christians believe they should take an active part in politics. In the Bible Christians are told that their faith must show itself in action. ( James chapter 2 verses 14-17). Christians also believe they should make the world fairer for poor people. Being involved in politics is a good way of doing this. Jesus also summarized all the laws as 'Love God, Love your neighbour as yourself'. Changing society for the better is a good way of showing your love for other people.
  3. Most Christians support the Welfare State because it is founded on Christian principles. It is seeking to support the poor and needy, which is part of loving your neighbour.
