Issues: Marriage

Interview with Andy and Rachel, a newly married Christian couple

How did you meet?

At a young people's Christian Summer Camp where we were both helpers

How did you know he/she was "the one"?

Rachel: 'Just knew' from the beginning!

Andy: Took a while to realise! I just took longer to come to the same conclusion - after we'd spent quite a chunk of time together. Being a little bit younger I didn't feel 'ready' at first.
Very difficult question to answer! We were both very sure when the time was right - three years on.

Was it important to you that you married a Christian? Why?

Yes - for both of us. In fact - this was the most important thing to both of us when we discussed 'going out'. With God being central to both our lives we both needed a relationship that was going to be God - centred.

Did you live together before you got married? If not, why not?

No - we were following God's commands to stay apart and not sleep together until we were married. Much easier if you're not living in the same house! We wanted things to be different when we got married - setting up a house together etc.

Was it important to you that the marriage service took place in a church?

In some ways - but mainly because we wanted our family and friends around and to remember where we had learnt so much about our God. The building isn't really important - God still sees you as married wherever it happens!

How do you think being Christians makes a difference to your marriage?

We still have our problems!!! However, our faith really is central to our marriage. We pray about all the decisions we make - however large or small. We also try to treat each other with respect and patience - sometimes more successfully than others!
