What Do You Think?

Jo and Jeremy

This is Jo and Jeremy. They have been married for 8 years. For six of those years, they have been trying unsuccessfully to conceive a baby. They have had tests. Jeremy has a very low sperm count and it has been suggested that IVF might aid the couple in their desire to have a baby.

They couple have just got to the top of the waiting list. The consultant Dr. H. V. Ababy has explained that for the procedure to have the greatest chance of success, Jo should be given hormones to make her produce many eggs. Only two fertilised eggs would be put back into her uterus. Any other fertilised eggs would be frozen and could be used in a future attempt, or if it was successful, for embryo research or for another couple. If Jeremy's sperm consistently failed to fertilise the eggs, it has been suggested that donor sperm could be used. Jo and Jeremy are both Roman Catholic Christians and are concerned whether it is right for them to use donor sperm and whether it would be acceptable to create these spare embryos which may have to be destroyed in the future. They are even unsure as to whether they should have any treatment at all. Should they just leave the matter in God's hands?

Using the evidence available on the desk, help her decide what she should do.

When you have looked at all the evidence, decide for yourself if you think a Christian should have IVF.
