An Introduction to Christian Ethics |
ConclusionChristians make moral decisions by trying to work out what God would want them to do. A Christian should always be trying to obey the two Greatest Commandments Jesus gave them, to love God and other people. What is moral, then, is what is loving to God and others. A Christian would also bear in mind the basic Christian beliefs when considering what is moral. For example, when considering how we should treat others, animals or our environment, a Christian would have to bear in mind that the Bible states that God created the world and made humans custodians of this earth. All Christians believe that the Bible is God's revelation of himself to the world. All Christians would look to the Bible to find out what God might have to teach about any particular issue. Christians consider studying the Bible to be important, as they believe it contains details of how God wants them to live. Although subjects such as abortion and use of genetic research might not be explicitly addressed in the Bible, Christians believe that the Bible has much to say on these modern issues as many of the guiding principles contained in the Bible are relevant to these issue (such as where life comes from, the importance of justice, mercy and forgiveness, the sanctity of life etc). Protestants would always look to the Bible to help them make moral decisions. |
