Issues: The Environment

Related Issues Concerning Specific Problems Today

Christians agree on the need to be good stewards of the environment, but hold many differing, even conflicting, views on how this applies when specific issues are raised. It may be that birth control conflicts with "rule over every living thing", and Christian communities may feel spiritual issues (prayer, worship etc.) may require resources of time as priorities rather than materials ones (environmental problems).

In getting to a conclusion on issues like these, consider the Bible passages in the section 'Christian Responses to God's World', and ask Christians for their views and what reasons they have.

Here are some views that Christians hold:

  • 'God has the right to have all his creatures treated with proper respect.' (Cardinal Heanan, Roman Catholic Archbishop)
  • 'Animals, as part of God's creation, have rights which must be protected.' (1977, Archbishop Donald Coggan, Anglican Archbishop)
  • 'Christians must support those working for conservation and the development of more appropriate sustainable lifestyles.' (Methodist Conference 1991)
  • 'Let the law of kindness know no limits. Show a loving consideration for all God's creatures.' (Quakers 'The General Advice' 1926)
