Issues: Crime and Punishment

FORMS OF PUNISHMENT

There are various ways of punishing criminals. For less serious crimes, the criminal might be fined, or given community service. They may be given a suspended sentence (whereby they only go to prison if they commit another crime within a given period of time). For more serious crimes (e.g. rape, murder, grievous bodily harm,) or for persistent offenders (who have committed lots of less serious crimes) the punishment is usually imprisonment.

Some countries (but not Britain) have capital punishment as a method of punishment. Capital punishment is where the criminal is killed because he committed a very serious crime.
