What Is Truth? |
'What is truth?', the cynical Roman Governor asked Jesus. ( The Bible, John chapter 18 verse 38 ). The Roman Empire was filled with many different beliefs. Many practiced a 'pick and mix' religion - taking bits they liked from different faiths and mixing them together. But was it true? Pilate did not believe any of it - and he did not care. He believed there was no 'big truth.' Today we call this way of thinking 'post modernism' - but there is nothing modern about it! Jesus' most quoted saying was 'I tell you the truth.' ( The Bible, John chapter 14 verse 12 ). Christians believe that there is a thing called 'The Truth', and that it was revealed by Jesus. They believe that things that are true can be examined and should be supported by evidence that fits the facts. Christians welcome questions and debate around the evidence concerning the Christian faith. It was the Christian idea that 'the truth is out there' that encouraged the beginnings of western scientific research. Christians also believe that there are moral truths - things that are morally right and wrong and that they are revealed in the Bible, and in particular the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. They believe that, just as human nature does not change, so God's moral truths do not change whatever the prevailing opinions in society may be. |
